Winnipeg, MB – January 3, 2026 – Gustavo Zentner, Vice President – Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), issued the following statement after Winnipeg’s Congregation Shaarey Zedek synagogue was targeted with antisemitic graffiti early Friday morning.

"As the peace of the Sabbath ends, we are deeply disturbed to learn Congregation Shaarey Zedek – whose roots in Winnipeg date back nearly 140 years – was targeted in a vile anti-Jewish hate crime.

"Words are not enough. Leaders at all levels of government and authorities must back up their condemnations with concrete action to hold perpetrators accountable and address the sources of hatred."

Congregation Shaarey Zedek's Senior Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose added: "We call on all Winnipeggers to stand up against hate. What’s at stake is not just the safety of one community, but the future of our Canadian way of life."
