Who We Are
The CIJA Legal Task Force (LTF) was created by CIJA for the purpose of using legal strategies to combat antisemitism, hate, and discrimination in Canada. The LTF is a collaborative effort that brings together a diverse group of volunteer legal experts from various backgrounds across Canada, including in-house counsel, practicing lawyers, retired lawyers and judges, as well as non-legal professionals and advisors.
Members of the LTF possess extensive experience in areas such as human rights law, labour and employment law, criminal law, tax law, international law, defamation law and litigation.
In response to the increasing reports of antisemitic incidents, the number of volunteers has grown significantly, now exceeding 200.
What We Do
The LTF leverages a range of legal disciplines in its mission to advance human rights and combat antisemitism, hate, and discrimination. Our efforts involve aiding victims in asserting their legal rights, defending human rights, and countering hate speech and hate crimes. We also ensure that members of professional organizations uphold their ethical obligations and address issues such as discrimination in the workplace, professional misconduct, or service refusal.
Through empowerment and education initiatives, we equip individuals with the knowledge to understand and assert their rights effectively.
We analyze current legislation to assess its efficacy in tackling antisemitism. When necessary, we devise strategic plans and propose innovative laws to address gaps and enhance legal frameworks.
How We Do It
Providing One-on-One Legal Assistance
The LTF assists individuals and organizations affected by antisemitism or hate by offering advice or pro bono representation in legal proceedings.
Launching Impact Litigation
The LTF helps individuals uphold their rights by launching impact litigation in the furtherance of its goal to fight antisemitism and hate.
Educating and Empowering Individuals
The LTF produces resource materials, arranges, and participates in seminars and workshops to help empower individuals in their fight against antisemitism and hate.
