This Week in Canadian Jewish Advocacy

CIJA discovered that Community Media Advocacy Centre (CMAC), which received more than $130k in funding through Canadian Heritage’s Anti-Racism Action Plan, has been using their senior consultant Laith Marouf to train broadcasters in anti-racism, despite having repeatedly tweeted hateful, antisemitic, and anti-francophone comments. CIJA immediately brought the information to the attention of the Ministry, requesting an investigation into CMAC and, in the wake of a similar discovery with the Muslim Association of Canada’s conference earlier this summer, for them to undertake a thorough review to determine how organizations that are clearly not aligned with core values of the Anti-Racism Action Program were provided funding and to take action to address this appalling situation. This incident is garnering significant media attention, with more than 50 Canadian outlets covering it today across the country. We will keep you informed as the situation develops.

On an official visit to Germany, at a formal event at the German Chancellery, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of ’50 holocausts.’ Comments like this are definitive examples of ‘Holocaust Inversion,’ which denies or diminishes the reality of the Holocaust.

To add offence to this dangerous statement, Abbas also refused to condemn the ‘Munich Massacre,’ the murder by Palestinian militants of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games. Many expected Abbas to issue an apology after sources cited Fatah’s role in supporting the terrorists responsible for the massacre.

His antisemitic comments were strongly condemned by the German government and denounced by many in the international diplomatic community. However, when the deaths of six million women, children, and men at the hands of Nazis and their collaborators are trivialized publicly and callously by a central figure in the region, it must be – unilaterally and universally – condemned.

To this end, CIJA publicly denounced Abbas’ insulting remarks and called for all to speak out and condemn the shameful statement.
