Media Relations Associate (CIJA)

We are seeking a creative Media Relations Associate to join our team. This role works collaboratively with members of the CIJA Media Relations and Communications and Marketing teams to develop and implement effective communications activities and campaigns designed to advance CIJA’s objectives with advocacy audiences and community stakeholders. The position is based in our Toronto office and reports to the Director of Media Relations and Communications.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) builds and nurtures relationships with leaders in government, media, academia, civil society, and other faith and ethnic communities to ensure greater understanding of the issues that impact the Jewish community. CIJA combats antisemitism and discrimination in all its forms and advocates for fundamental rights and freedoms, social justice, and support for the people of Israel. As the advocacy agent of the Jewish Federations of Canada, CIJA is a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of Jewish life in Canada by advancing the public policy interests of Canada’s organized Jewish community.

CIJA connects the power of a strong, national network to regional efforts in every Canadian province and, as the Canadian affiliate of the World Jewish Congress, to international efforts worldwide.

Primary Functions

• Assist CIJA’s Media Relations and Communications and Marketing teams to implement and execute multi-faceted communications campaigns
• Monitor news cycle, government and law enforcement press conferences, social media, and the activities of relevant organizations to identify proactive and reactive opportunities
• Draft and distribute communications materials – press releases, media advisories, statements, pitches, quotes / comments, and other products
• Pitch print, broadcast, and online journalists through various means to ensure CIJA’s expert commentary is included when issues of concern to the Jewish community are being covered
• Media monitoring, tracking and creation of media analysis reports
• Manage coordination of interviews – scheduling, drafting interview briefs / key messages, etc.
• Support the Director in providing media relations advice and support to CIJA’s staff, Federations across Canada and their affiliated agencies; and Database maintenance and management – sourcing new contacts and outlets, development of campaign and issue specific media lists, regularly verifying and updating contact list
• Support planning and execution of events such as press conferences, media briefings, media tours, etc.
• Support planning and execution of local CIJA and Federation events, act as a CIJA ambassador at community events
• Special projects as deemed appropriate by supervisor

Requirements

• A university degree and/or a certificate or diploma in public relations, marketing, communications, journalism or related field
• Passion for public relations / media relations and fighting hate and racism
• Knowledge of issues of concern to Canada’s Jewish Community
• Exceptional writing and editing skills, ability to produce clear, compelling, high-quality, and error free copy
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office
• Eye for detail
• Results oriented
• Desire to learn and grow
• A positive attitude
• French bilingualism an asset
