International Holocaust Remembrance Day
National Monument Illumination Campaign
Ottawa, ON – January 26, 2023 – Friday, January 27, Canadians will stand united with a global movement to remember the six million Jewish children, women, and men murdered in the Holocaust. The commemoration is part of International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD), this year marking the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
On January 26 and 27, monuments, buildings, and well-known landmarks across Canada will be illuminated in yellow light in remembrance.
WHAT:
To commemorate the Holocaust and build awareness and discussions regarding the rise in antisemitism and the need for Holocaust education, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and local Jewish Federations coordinated the illumination of more than 50 public venues across Canada, including Ottawa’s National Holocaust Monument and Peace Tower, Niagara Falls, the Toronto sign and CN Tower, Montreal’s Olympic Stadium Tower and Champlain Bridge, and Vancouver’s Canada Place. Each will be bathed in yellow, evoking candlelight, in remembrance (some on the evening of January 26 and others on January 27).
WHEN:
Thursday, January 26, and Friday, January 27 – sundown
WHERE:
The full list of monuments to be illuminated across the country will be updated, here.
