CIJA Reacts to Detainment of Suspect in Antisemitic Graffiti Incidents

Holding Those Responsible for Antisemitic Graffiti Accountable
Attribute to Gustavo Zentner, Vice President, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA):
We are grateful for the swift work and collaboration of the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) Hate Crime Unit to ensure that several recent antisemitic crimes are being dealt with seriously. In addition to the 26 charges levied today, the WPS has confirmed that they will be conducting further investigations to see whether the perpetrator is linked to other hate offences.
Let us be unequivocal: neo-Nazi activity and antisemitic incitement in our province are designed to harm not only the Jewish community but also Manitobans from all backgrounds who value their safety and the well-being of our democracy. The radicalism we see growing on our streets and across Canada must not be allowed to take root. As Manitobans, we must not stand for it. As Canadians, we must not stand for it.
Our governments must be held accountable for creating effective policies and programs to protect us from the harm these extremists are doing to our society. And law enforcement must be empowered to allocate the resources necessary to identify those responsible for such hateful acts and to hold them fully accountable under the law.
The time for action and deterrents is now. Those who wish to divide our society through hate must know that they will never be welcome here.
