CIJA urges the Government of Canada to ban the glorification of terrorism
Toronto, ON – January 2, 2025 – In light of the ISIS-inspired terror attack in New Orleans, as well as today's news that a Canadian youth has been arrested for allegedly attempting to join ISIS overseas, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) renewed its call for the Government of Canada to ban the glorification of terrorism.
Noah Shack, Interim President of CIJA, issued the following statement:
"The horrifying, ISIS-inspired attack on innocent life in New Orleans must be a wake-up call to Canadian leaders. Multiple, made-in-Canada terror plots directly linked to ISIS have been uncovered in recent months. This includes two youth arrested for allegedly plotting to bomb a pro-Israel rally in Ottawa, an individual arrested while travelling to New York City for an alleged plan to attack a Jewish centre, and a father and son arrested with weapons at what police say was the advance stage of a terror plot in the Greater Toronto Area.
"How many terror plots and close calls are required for our federal government to take real action against those fanning the flames of extremism? For nearly 15 months, major cities across Canada have seen hate rallies featuring calls for violence, pro-terrorist rhetoric, and flags explicitly supporting terrorist organizations. It's long past time for the Government of Canada to protect Canadians by passing a reasonable law banning the glorification of terrorist groups."
