“This is an attack on a core Canadian institution with imagery used to both intimidate Jews and to cynically appropriate our trauma.”
Ottawa, ON – CIJA joins the Jewish Federation of Ottawa in strongly denouncing the overnight desecration of the provincial courthouse in Ottawa with antisemitic graffiti.
In response, Andrea Freedman, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa issued the following:
“The swastika is a symbol of the murder of millions of Jews and the terrorization of millions more. This hateful graffiti represents hostility toward Canada’s democratic values.
“This is an attack on a core Canadian institution with imagery used to both intimidate Jews and to cynically appropriate our trauma and the Jewish lived experience for totally unrelated political purposes. We abhor the continuing use of the Holocaust, Nazism, and the genocide of European Jews for propaganda purposes. It must stop.
“Jews continue to be, by far, the most targeted victims of hate crimes in Canada by population size. We urge all Canadians to join us in condemning these acts of hate and to stand strong against the dangers of antisemitism which tears at the fabric of our society to the detriment of Jewish and non-Jewish Canadians alike.”
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) is the advocacy agent of the Jewish Federations across Canada, including the Jewish Federation of Ottawa.
The Jewish Federation of Ottawa is a non-profit community organization that raises funding to help advance and promote an exceptional quality of Jewish life with the goal of ensuring a thriving Ottawa Jewish community that is inclusive, accessible, educated and engaged.
