Statscan: Jewish Canadians Targeted 22 Times More In Hate Crimes
Ottawa, ON– July 22, 2026 – New data released today by Statistics Canada reveal that hate crimes targeting Canadian Jews remained high in 2025, with 788 police-reported incidents—making Jews, who represent one per cent of the population, the target of 71 per cent of religion-motivated hate crimes and underscoring how Canada’s antisemitism crisis is specific, severe, and demands a targeted response.
In response to the report, Noah Shack, CEO, Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), released the following statement:
"The latest hate crime data further reinforce Canada's antisemitism crisis, with Jews targeted at rates disproportionate to any other community. To put these figures in perspective, a Jewish Canadian is 22 times more likely to be the victim of a hate crime than any other Canadian."
“When criminals attack Jews, it’s not because of how we pray. Much of today's antisemitic violence – which includes gunfire and firebombing of synagogues and schools, vandalizing businesses, and assaulting community members – is perpetrated by extremists at home and foreign actors abroad, driven by conspiracy theories and anti-Israel hate. Governments and authorities must be unequivocal: nothing can justify these criminal acts targeting Canadians.”
“Prime Minister Carney has rightly stated that the covenant that makes Canada possible is being tested by the scourge of antisemitism, noting that it is "specific, severe, and demands a targeted response." This reflects the seriousness of the moment and the urgent need for action."
“Government and authorities at all levels must acknowledge the drivers of today's antisemitism, including the extremism and radicalization that fuel attacks against Jews; consistent enforcement of the law; get tough on terror; and ensure public institutions and government bodies, such as the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the Canada Revenue Agency, are not weaponized against Canadians.”
