Statement from CIJA on Hasan Piker’s Upcoming Appearance at UBC
Vancouver, B.C. – January 14, 2026 – On February 12, 2026, controversial U.S.-based political streamer Hasan Piker is scheduled to speak at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, presented by the University of British Columbia’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs in partnership with the Chan Centre.
Nico Slobinsky, Vice President – Pacific Region, Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, released the following statement:
"Since October 7, 2023, we have witnessed an alarming surge in antisemitism across social media platforms, on university campuses and in the streets of Vancouver. This is backed by Statistics Canada data showing that the Jewish community is by far the most targeted group for hate crimes, and by a survey finding that 62 per cent of Vancouver’s Jewish residents have experienced at least one antisemitic incident.
“U.S.-based streamer Hasan Piker’s appearance at the University of British Columbia comes amid growing concern about Mr. Piker’s public record of statements that minimize or justify violence, amplify extremist actors, and demonize Jews and Israelis.
"In recent months, Mr. Piker has also made statements that appear to excuse or trivialize political violence. This includes posting imagery that suggests gun violence against elected officials and publicly declaring that ‘America deserved 9/11.’ Such rhetoric is incompatible with Canadian values and raises serious public safety concerns.
"Canada’s immigration law is clear that foreign nationals do not have an inherent right to enter Canada. In the current climate of rising extremism and heightened security threats, allowing individuals who promote dangerous rhetoric into Canada, and platform Canadian-listed terrorist entities, risks threatening public safety. We urge the Government of Canada to review this matter carefully and act decisively to protect Canadians.”
