This is the 7th time a Jewish institution has been physically targeted in Montreal and the 2nd time these specific institutions were targeted

Montreal, QC – December 18, 2024 – The Jewish community in Montreal is again outraged and demanding justice and swift action after even more cowardly acts of intimidation occurred overnight. Incendiary devices were thrown at Beth Tikvah synagogue and at the West Island Federation CJA building in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, both causing damage to the exterior and interior of the buildings, although protective measures implemented by Federation CJA’s Community Security Network helped to minimize damage.

“These are yet more craven acts undertaken in the middle of the night intended to intimidate and harass the Jewish community. Over the last 14 months, this is the seventh instance where a Jewish institution has been targeted in Montreal and the second time these specific institutions were targeted, chilling reminders of what happens when politicians fail to call out antisemitism and prevent the escalation of violence on our streets. We call on Mayor Plante to crack down immediately on the unacceptable rise in antisemitism in Montreal. Our community is outraged, but we are also determined in our demand for action. We know that the silent, moderate majority in Quebec is disgusted by the extremism and violence targeting our community and threatening our society. We expect the authorities to treat this incident with the highest level of scrutiny and consider all likely motives. Enough is enough,” said Yair Szlak, President and CEO, Federation CJA.

Both the fire department and SPVM are on the scene, as is our Community Security Network, which is coordinating with law enforcement.

SPVM will increase their presence outside institutions today and in the coming days, and our CSN will continue to monitor and secure our schools and synagogues. There is no indication of a specific threat to our community at this time.

FCJA’s Community Security Network will continue to work directly with local security teams and the SPVM to ensure the Jewish community’s safety. With our support and the healthy vigilance of our community, Jewish life in Montreal will continue to thrive in our synagogues, schools, and other community institutions.

Federation CJA and CIJA remind community members that, in an emergency, they should always call 911 first. When safe, they are encouraged to report incidents to the Community Security Hotline at 514-343-4343 or use this online form. People are urged to upload any photos or video they capture to that portal.
