MONTREAL - Five days after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, Université de Montréal rector Daniel Jutras was under growing pressure to say more about the conflict.
Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek took to social media on Wednesday to say she wouldn’t attend the annual menorah lighting at city hall due to the event being politicized.
“It was really important to see the love, the support and the solidarity of Jewish people in Canada,” Ohad Lapidot, whose daughter Tiferet was murdered at the Supernova music festival, told JNS.
The delay was attributed to a "deliberate and malicious walk-off of drivers," which was later mentioned during the rally as an act of antisemitism by bus drivers refusing to transport the attendees.
"Probably everyone here has someone they know in Israel," said Randi Elkind of Toronto, gesturing to the crowd of thousands. "What's really important is that we need to stand together as a Jewish people."
