Toronto, ON – August 26, 2025 – In response to the announcement today that Germany will not proceed with Palestinian statehood recognition, Noah Shack, CEO, Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, released the following statement:

“Today, following a meeting with Prime Minister Carney, Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed that Germany will not recognize Palestinian statehood in September, noting that they ‘do not consider the conditions for state recognition to be fulfilled in any way at present.’

“Canada knows this. We will not join this initiative. We don’t see the requirements met,” stated Merz.

“The German Government is correct: recognizing Palestinian statehood “right now would undermine efforts toward peace.” It will not return the Israelis held hostage or bring an end to Hamas’ rule in Gaza, and it will do nothing to alleviate the humanitarian situation on the ground.

“We urge the Government of Canada to change course.”
