Yiddish Psychedelic Rock (Winnipeg)

In 2003, visionary Latvian duo Sasha Lurje (vocals) and Ilya Shneyveys (keyboard, arrangement) asked themselves, ‘What would have happened if Yiddish had never been interrupted?’.

They together imagined an exciting world they called Yiddishland where young people played in Yiddish language garage bands, where klezmer musicians wield electric guitars alongside fiddles, and traditional Yiddish ballads are as revered as rock anthems.

Imagine a world where Yiddish culture thrives as a fusion of the old and new. In the United Nations of World Music, forshpil represents Yiddishland!

Since it’s creation, forshpil has traveled all over Europe and North America, playing and teaching at major Jewish and world music events.

A forshpil concert is a transcendent experience—Lurje’s powerful vocals leading the charge through a fusion of Yiddish songs, Hassidic nigunim, and klezmer, transformed with cosmic rock, funk, and jazz.

Deeply rooted in tradition yet infused with otherworldly psychedelia, this fusion feels both wildly innovative and profoundly authentic.
