Tell Your MPP to Support Bill 166
We are facing a pivotal moment on campus. The news is full of disturbing images coming from campuses in the U.S., and now we’re starting to see a growing trend on campuses here in Canada.
Frankly, confidence in our post-secondary institutions has been severely shaken by the challenges to effectively address the rising tide of overt antisemitism and hate on Ontario campuses. This situation has only escalated since October 7, becoming more virulent and pervasive.
A statement of condemnation is not enough, action is needed to confront such hate.
This spring, Ontario’s Minister of Colleges and Universities, Jill Dunlop, introduced Bill 166, Strengthening Accountability and Student Supports Act, 2024, legislation aimed at addressing racism and hate on college and university campuses. This bill would make it mandatory for every post-secondary institution in Ontario to implement an anti-hate policy.
To strengthen this important Bill, Thornhill MPP Laura Smith successfully introduced a motion recommending an accountability framework that would set a timeline for addressing hate-related incidents and complaints, require the submission of annual reports, and provide enforcement mechanisms including penalties for non-compliance. We are asking Minister Dunlop to incorporate this framework into her ministerial directive.
