Tell Canada’s leaders to take action against terror and radicalization!
The recent surge in home-grown radicalization and the resulting increase in hate crimes against Jews in Canada have reached a tipping point.
In just these past few weeks, we have learned that ISIS-inspired youth planned to bomb a Jewish rally in Ottawa and that Iran’s IRGC attempted to assassinate Irwin Cotler, Canada’s first Special Envoy on Combatting Antisemitism and a prominent Jewish leader.
Earlier this year, a Canadian citizen attempted a terrorist attack in Israel. Another Canadian was recently convicted in the United Kingdom for belonging to a proscribed terrorist organization.
These incidents are not isolated; they are part of a broad, overt pattern of radicalization in Canada.
Yesterday we held a press conference on Parliament Hill, laying out our asks for the Federal Government. We told them clearly that words are not enough. We need action now. We call on the government to:
-
Convene a National Forum on Combatting Hate Crimes, Terrorism, and Antisemitism, bringing together federal, provincial, and municipal leaders with law enforcement to coordinate efforts and ensure consistent application of anti-hate legislation.
-
Strengthen enforcement of Canada’s hate crime laws, ensuring charges, including for criminal intimidation, unlawful assembly, and hate propaganda, are laid against those promoting violence or inciting hate against Jews.
-
Enhance judicial and law enforcement training, modeled on past initiatives like Bill C-3, to equip officials with the tools to recognize and address antisemitism, while utilizing the IHRA definition of antisemitism.
-
Bolster community safety programs by establishing dedicated liaisons within law enforcement, creating specialized hate crime units, and improving intelligence-sharing to address rising threats.
-
Address radicalization and extremism, including banning terrorist symbols and cracking down on those glorifying terrorism, which emboldens extremists and undermines Canadian security.
Call on the Canadian government to take immediate action. These steps are crucial for safeguarding not only the Jewish community, but Canadian society as a whole.
