Reporting and Safety On Campus
Although recent events on Canadian campuses have shaken the Jewish community’s confidence in post-secondary institutions to secure everyone’s safety and well-being, we work closely with our partners to ensure our campuses are safe for all.
Students, faculty, and staff on campus should be aware of how to access campus resources and navigate concerning incidences when they occur:
- If you feel a threat to your safety, call 911 immediately.
- For non-emergencies, find the contact information for your campus security and save it in your phone.
- Document everything you see and experience, in and out of the classroom, even online. Take screenshots and photos, if safe to do so. This information will be useful for law enforcement and for reporting to the administration. You should share this info with your Hillel or with CIJA, even if you do not report it to the administration.
- Locate the Code of Conduct resources on your university website and submit formal complaints using the relevant reporting procedures for that institution. Hillel is available to help you, and CIJA will help if you do not have a Hillel on your campus.
- Find the listing details of your campus mental health and wellness resources and take advantage of these services.
- Many institutions have informal faculty and staff peer groups that can provide additional support.
- Remember, you are not alone – our community organizations are here for you!
Faculty
Faculty members seeking further guidance should consult this helpful resource and turn to the Network of Engaged Canadian Academics (NECA) for support.
Legal Task Force
If, after exhausting all appropriate institutional channels, you need additional assistance when dealing with concerns impacting you directly at your post-secondary institution, you may be eligible to receive legal advice through CIJA’s Legal Task Force.
Local Hillels
Hillel is the Jewish community organization mandated to protect and facilitate Jewish campus life and lead advocacy efforts that ensure Jewish students feel safe at all Canadian colleges and universities. Please contact your local Hillel for any questions or concerns related to Jewish student issues on Canadian campuses.
Please contact us if your campus doesn’t have a local Hillel.
