Montreal: Commemoration of Kristallnacht: The Posthumous Landscape

JLIVE Poster.png

Join the Montreal Holocaust Museum on November 9 at 4 p.m. to commemorate the legacy of Kristallnacht, the pogrom organized by the Nazis on November 9 and 10, 1938.

Kristallnacht marked a turning point in Nazi discrimination against Jews, shifting from discriminatory policies to widespread violence and destruction that continued throughout the Holocaust. The vibrant Jewish life that existed in Europe was decimated, leaving only traces behind.

David Kaufman's The Posthumous Landscape is a tribute to the Jews of Eastern Europe, to their once-thriving sites, and a testament to our deep attachment to the places of our past. It is much more than just an act of preserving memory.

Drawing on decades of experience in documentary storytelling, Kaufman brings these abandoned places to light. His photographs and accompanying texts describe a historic community that played a major role in the development of Eastern European society and left behind large industrial complexes, urban neighborhoods, architectural monuments, magnificent synagogues, as well as vast cemeteries and significant memorials. The photographs also tell the story of the afterlife of these places, many of which have been redeveloped, some lovingly tended by non-Jews who remember, and others slowly returning to the earth, but preserved in the pages of this book.

On the occasion of its Montreal launch, David Kaufman will be speaking with Norman Ravvin, professor in the Department of Religions and Cultures at Concordia University, to discuss his book at our Kristallnacht commemoration on November 9.

The books will be on sale at the event.
