On September 4, 2024, Meta’s Oversight Board ruled that the phrase “From the river to the sea” — a rallying cry, enshrined in Hamas’ charter that means the destruction and elimination of Israel from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea — should not automatically result in content removal on Facebook and Instagram, determining that the phrase itself is not inherently harmful or violent. In response, the J7, the Large Communities’ Task Force Against Antisemitism, representing the seven largest Jewish Diaspora communities, sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. We asked him to reject the Oversight Board's dangerous and short-sighted decision and ensure Meta recognize the harm this phrase poses to the Jewish community worldwide.
