After Belleville Attack, CIJA Warns Government Foreign Policy Double Standards have Consequences at Home

Ottawa, ON – September 23, 2026: Following Prime Minister Carney’s co-chairing of a UN meeting on the two-state solution, and inflammatory comments by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand at the United Nations, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) issued the following statement: 

“We share the objective of a peaceful and secure future for Israelis and Palestinians. But Canada’s one-sided punitive approach diminishes Canada’s influence and its ability to contribute meaningfully to peace on the ground.  

“Canada recognized a Palestinian state over a year ago. Yet there has been no accountability for the Palestinian Authority to deliver on the commitments Prime Minister Carney himself set out, including fundamental governance reform, elections in which Hamas can play no part, and demilitarization. 

“Today, Foreign Minister Anand went even further, entertaining potential action against an Israeli aircraft travelling to the United Nations. It is another outrageous example of the extraordinary double standard at the heart of Canada’s approach to Israel. 

“Following the attack on a Belleville synagogue on Yom Kippur, Canadian leaders have a responsibility to protect Jewish Canadians from the domestic consequences of a dangerous double standard toward Israel that gives extremists a green light to target Canadians.”
