Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver is seeking a Director of Finance to join our dynamic team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute your skills to a mission-driven organization that strengthens the Jewish community locally, nationally, and globally.

Position Summary:

The Director of Finance oversees the financial operations of Federation, including an annual operating budget exceeding $3.5 million and a robust annual granting program. The Director of Finance is responsible for providing leadership in overall financial management, strategic guidance, risk management, and reporting for the organization.

This role ensures accurate and timely financial information is delivered to the Board of Directors, Foundation's Governors, Finance Committee, the Executive team, department heads, general staff, external stakeholders, and donors. The Director also oversees financial operations for both the Federation and the Foundation, addressing the diverse financial information needs of these key groups.

Job Responsibilities:

Financial Strategy and Leadership:

  • Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Provide strategic insights and in-depth analysis to the C-suite and department leadership team, leveraging expertise in assigned areas to support informed decision-making and effective organizational management.
  • Provide financial oversight of the Jewish Community Foundation, the endowment division of the organization, with assets under management of over $100 million.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate finance department staff, fostering the development of a skilled, motivated, and high-performing team.
  • Work in partnership with the Treasurer and Finance Committee, including serving as the lead committee staff managing all aspects of the committee’s operations, including financial reporting, meeting coordination, and follow-up on action items.

Budgeting, Financial Planning, and Reporting:

  • Lead the preparation, monitoring, and reporting of the annual budget, including analyzing and reporting variances, providing actionable recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate with program managers and the development team to create program-specific budgets, prepare financial reports for grant applications, and track spending to ensure compliance with funder guidelines.
  • Provide timely and accurate financial reports and analysis, including for restricted and unrestricted funds, and prepare financial models and forecasts to support strategic planning and organizational growth.
  • Oversee financial reporting for restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring proper allocation and compliance with funder requirements.

Accounting and Financial Operations:

  • Oversee accounting operations and prepare the annual budget, as well as manage audits, tax returns, monthly reports, and year-end financial statements.
  • Manage the accounting operations, budget preparation, and financial controls while implementing policies and systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Manage banking, investments, auditor, outside payroll service, facilities and insurance relationships of the organization.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Protect the organization’s assets by maintaining robust internal controls and ensuring adherence to all accounting and reporting standards.
  • Oversee organizational risk management by identifying, assessing, and mitigating financial, operational, and compliance risks to safeguard the Federation’s assets and ensure long-term stability.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and coordinate annual audits.

Other:

  • Provide oversight and leadership to the HR and IT functions of the organization as needed.
  • Contribute to a respectful, positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Maintain, update and report on Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).
  • Provide financial advice to members of the greater community, including partner agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required); CPA designation (required).
  • 7-10 years of progressive financial management experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting principles and practices (e.g., ASNPO or fund accounting).
  • Experience in the non-profit sector, including fund accounting and grant management, is strongly preferred.
  • Proven expertise in budgeting, financial analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience managing audits, tax filings, and financial operations in a nonprofit organization.
  • Proficiency with not-for-profit accounting software and advanced Excel skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • High level of integrity and commitment to the organization’s mission.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Salary range: $117,000 - $147,000

Schedule: Fulltime, based on a 35-hour workweek
