Ottawa, ON – September 21, 2025 – Today, the Government of Canada officially announced its recognition of Palestinian statehood. In response, Noah Shack, CEO, Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), issued the following statement:

"Recognizing statehood of a territory run by terrorists and where hostages remain in captivity is a reward for the October 7 terror attacks.

"This move emboldens Hamas, undermines peace efforts, prolongs the suffering of Palestinians under Hamas rule, and fuels global incitement against the Jewish people.

"Since the government announced its intention to recognize Palestinian statehood in July, anti-Jewish hate crimes have surged here in Canada. Violence against Jewish Canadians has escalated, as seen in recent assaults - including a stabbing attack in Nepean.

"The government’s policy should be clear-eyed and focused on releasing the Israeli hostages, securing a ceasefire, and the removal of Hamas from power."
