    A collection of Jewish community figures, diplomats, and politicians will gather in front of the National War Memorial at 11 a.m. today to commemorate victims of the Holocaust. The event comes ahead of international Holocaust remembrance day, which takes place tomorrow. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, Jewish Federation of Ottawa, and the Israeli Embassy have organized today’s commemoration.

    On Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued its first order in the ongoing case of South Africa’s spurious claims that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza as it responds to Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 massacre and continues to defend itself against the terrorist group’s mission to eradicate the Jewish state.

    In November 2023, several Jewish community leaders from Alberta, traveled to Israel for an emergency solidarity mission as part of a delegation of Canadian Federations. They came back with a renewed sense of urgency for Hamas and other terror groups to return the hostages that were brutally abducted during the Oct. 7 massacre. They felt conflicting emotions – sadness, anger, solidarity and also respect for the Israelis for their resiliency and their commitment to prevent future terror attacks.
