Mayor Olivia Chow recently announced the planned budget for the City of Toronto and while headlines focused on other aspects of it, missing from media coverage was the mention of the $12.6 million in proposed cuts to the Toronto Police budget.

We have seen a wave of hateful protests rife with violent hate speech throughout the city – often targeting Jewish neighbourhoods, schools, community centres, and businesses. There have been bomb scares at a Jewish school, an arson attack on a Jewish delicatessen, and hateful graffiti on Jewish homes.

Police have conducted investigations, made arrests, and protected Jewish communities and institutions through strengthened patrols and mobile command centres.

This comes at a cost. To be cutting a budget that is only seeing increased demands from anti-Israel protests and targeting of Jews isn’t just ill-thought out, it’s unacceptable.

Tell Mayor Chow and City Council that cutting police funding now has worrisome consequences and urge her to reinstate the Toronto Police budget so they can continue to protect all Torontonians.
