In engaging with our neighbours, friends, colleagues, and social peers, these messages are integral to sharing our narrative effectively.
It is fundamental to the hasbara effort in which we are all currently engaged, so, let’s start with an observation Rabbi Sean Gorman shared at the conference. It is not correct to assert that “Israel has the right to defend itself.” A right is something that one can choose to exercise or not. In fact, Israel has the obligation to defend the country and her citizens, a self-evident responsibility that it cannot abrogate.
We should not allow purposefully malicious language that skews the definition or intention of what we want to say to creep into the public conversation. And we must stay alert to efforts by adversaries to do just that.
