Rosh Hashanah is a time of remembrance and renewal. As we reflect on a challenging year, we feel profoundly grateful to be part of a community that is united, strong, and resilient. Jews look after one another – while also contributing to the places in which we live, love, and raise our kids.
There is no greater example of this communal care than the enormous contribution Jewish Federations across Canada have made since the outbreak of the pandemic. The dedicated professionals who are the beating heart of our Federation system have mobilized thousands of volunteers, made tens of thousands of wellness calls, provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in food relief, and invested millions in emergency grants for Jewish agencies on the front lines, who are looking after our most vulnerable.
And they are doing all this while, at the same time, building our collective Jewish future. As we look forward to 5781, we see uncertainty, but amid that uncertainty are important truths: the challenges we face are fleeting; the Jewish people are forever. We will live, survive, and thrive together. Am Israel Chai!
At CIJA, our mission is to preserve and protect Jewish life in Canada through advocacy. We know that the year ahead will demand much from us and from our community. Though our advocacy agenda is diverse, combating antisemitism remains our number-one priority, and we will maintain a particular focus on assertively lobbying policy makers to do more to combat the scourge Jew hatred online.
If there is an issue that impacts the Jewish people where you live that demands the attention of your advocacy agency, please tell us. We want to know what is on your mind.
Let this year’s blowing of the shofar awaken us to all for which we should be grateful and to all that will demand our collective attention.
This Rosh Hashanah, we hope that you, your family, and your friends can gather safely in a way that makes sense for the times so that, together, you can make a happy noise. There are significant challenges, to be sure, but let those not prevent us from finding delight in the delightful.
We wish you a happy, sweet – and, above all, healthy – New Year.
L’Shana Tova Umetuka!
