COVID-19, an update from CIJA

Mar 16, 2020 | A Word from Our Chair, CIJA Publications

The rapidly evolving situation related to COVID-19 is impacting all of us. CIJA wants you to know what we are doing to support our community during this difficult time.

Your Federation

Federations are the central hub of our community system. To see how you can help or if you need help, please be in touch with your local Jewish Federation. The Federation Directory is available on the Jewish Federations of Canada-UIA website.

Public Health

We know that everyone is carefully tracking information from credible local health authorities, and we ask you continue to do so. Public health agencies at all levels are issuing daily updates for their respective jurisdictions. If you have questions about what’s happening near you, please visit their websites. Here is a link to the relevant section of the Public Health Agency of Canada website.

At the same time, we would caution against reacting to the flood of unverified or inaccurate information being disseminated online. Verify the source of information before acting upon it.

CIJA Programs and Staff

We are joining the effort to slow the pace of transmission of this coronavirus.

We have deferred all missions to Israel and many upcoming public gatherings, including postponing the Words & Deeds Leadership Awards in Montreal, a decision taken in full consultation with and support of the honourees.

For information about your local activities, please check your community calendar or with your local CIJA staff.

On Friday, CIJA extended our remote work policy to allow many more staff to work remotely. CIJA will continue to operate with most of our staff working from home. We are reachable through all normal channels and will remain responsive to our constituents.

While governments are still determining how best to help Canadians, over the coming days, CIJA staff will be evaluating different sources of funding at all levels of government to determine what might be available to help organizations and families within our own constituency manage the situation. We will also be monitoring community needs and relaying those needs to our contacts in government.

Crisis Communications Support

If you lead a Jewish community institution and would like support managing your communications to your constituents in the coming days, please email us and we will follow up with you directly.

CIJA staff are working and remain available. If you have questions or concerns, please write to us.

Our community is strong, resilient, and able to remain unified in the face of major challenges. We are in this together!
