Montreal, QC — In the wake of the terror attack targeting Bastille Day celebrations in Nice, France, David J. Cape, Chair of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), issued the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened and profoundly outraged by this brazen terror attack on innocents at Bastille Day festivities in Nice, especially by the news that scores of children are among those murdered. The Jewish community joins with all Canadians in standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of France at this difficult time. We note President François Hollande’s clear-sighted observations: ‘All of France is under the threat of Islamist terrorism…We are standing before a long fight because we are facing an enemy who will continue to strike all peoples and all countries for which freedom is an essential value.’

“Canada is not immune to the devastating series of Islamist terror attacks afflicting our European allies, whether carried out by foreign terrorists or radicalized European citizens. Indeed, Canada has been the target of terrorist attacks including an assault using a vehicle to murder a Canadian soldier. That the Nice attacker was educated and socialized in France underscores the need for all Western governments to institute robust, counter-radicalization efforts. In that regard, we urge the Government of Canada to take all necessary measures to protect Canadians from such threats and provide ongoing support to France and our other allies.”
