Press Release: CIJA reacts to verdict and strict conditions for man found not criminally responsible for threatening to murder Jewish schoolgirls
Montreal, QC —Today, the Court of Quebec found Robert Gosselin not criminally responsible for threatening to murder Jewish schoolgirls in Montreal. A psychiatric evaluation found that the defendant suffers from a mental illness.
Gosselin was liberated under strict conditions: he was ordered to stay away from Jewish schools and synagogues; prohibited from using social networks and possessing firearms; must submit to psychiatric treatment; and keep the peace.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), in close coordination with Montreal’s Federation CJA, has been actively monitoring the case. We communicated the community’s concerns to the Crown during his hearing which led to stricter bail conditions.
In response, Brenda Gewurz, Chair of CIJA-Quebec, the advocacy agent of Federation CJA in Montreal, issued the following:
“The Jewish community accepts the Court’s verdict and feels a degree of reassurance at the strict release conditions, which take into account the concerns that we expressed to the prosecutor during Mr. Gosselin’s hearings, namely that he be ordered to stay away from Jewish institutions
“The recent attacks in Pittsburgh and Christchurch have cruelly reminded us that online hate often translates into real-world violence.
“The strict conditions attached to his release bring our community some comfort, as Mr. Gosselin will remain barred from approaching Jewish schools and synagogue, and will now also be prohibited from owning a firearm and using social media.”
- CIJA is calling for the Government of Canada to launch a national strategy to combat online hate. We can preserve free speech while protecting Canadians from those who deliberately promote hostility – and even glorify violence – against entire communities.Read our Policy Brief here.
- A lawyer speaking on behalf of CIJA transmitted the Jewish Community’s concerns to the prosecutor regarding Mr. Gosselin’s initial bail conditions, which did not include staying away from Jewish institutions.
