Press Release: CIJA’s Statement for the Second Anniversary of the Quebec Mosque Shooting

January 29, 2019

Montreal, QC – Today marks the second anniversary of the deadly shooting at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Québec City. To mark this tragic event, CIJA Co-Chairs Joel Reitman and Jeff Rosenthal issued the following:

“We remain saddened and deeply disturbed by the murder of six members of the Muslim faith, targeted while at prayer on this day two years ago. We reiterate our heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims shattered by this heinous crime. We repeat our call on governments and civil society alike to be vigilant in combating hatred against all minorities, knowing that bigotry and intolerance can pose a lethal threat to innocent life. When a society is not safe for one group it is not safe for any group.”

Rabbi Reuben Poupko, Co-Chair of CIJA-Quebec, added:

“The Jewish community stands with our Muslim friends and neighbours – and all Québécois – in remembering the victims of this atrocity. In addition to reaching out to the Muslim community to express solidarity at this painful time, we rededicate ourselves to standing against all forms of hatred and intolerance – which are anathema to Québécois and Canadian values.”
