Montreal: Letters from the Afterlife: The Post-Holocaust Correspondence of Chava Rosenfarb and Zenia Larsson

Extraordinarily little has been written about how women who survived the Holocaust dealt with life after the war, with the trauma of their immediate pasts, and with the debilitating sense of alienation they felt in a changed world. Letters from the Afterlife chronicles the experiences of two female Holocaust survivors as they adjusted to life in their adopted countries of Canada and Sweden, where they knew neither the language nor the culture.

Join us on October 30th at the Montreal Holocaust Museum for an in-person book talk at 7 pm with Goldie Morgentaler, the editor of Letters from the Afterlife, and Krzysztof Majer, one of the translators of Letters from the Afterlife. Goldie and Krzysztof will be in conversation with Sebastian Schulman, a writer, editor, and literary translator from Yiddish and other languages.

Childhood friends in Poland, Chava Rosenfarb and Zenia Larsson survived the Lodz Ghetto and concentration camps together, parting soon after their liberation from Bergen-Belsen. For the next fifty years, they continued their friendship through letters written in Polish, their only shared language. Despite their continuing traumas and insecurities, Rosenfarb and Larsson went on to become distinguished novelists in their respective languages, Yiddish and Swedish.

Tickets are $5 and reservations are required. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

This event is being run in partnership with The Yiddish Book Center, the Jewish Public Library, and The Main and Mile End Memories.
