Ottawa, ON – Upon learning of the passing of Jewish community leader Julia Koschitzky, z”l, National Co-Chairs of CIJA’s Board of Directors Joel Reitman and Jeffrey Rosenthal issued the following statement:
“On behalf of CIJA’s Board of Directors, professional staff, and the community we serve across Canada, we extend our deepest condolences to Henry and the entire Koschitzky family during this sad time. Those of us who were fortunate enough to know Julia can attest that her memory will indeed be for a blessing. Her commitment to the Jewish community in Canada and around the world and her devotion to Israel over her lifetime were unparalleled.
“She was an extraordinary leader who had a deep love for Judaism, for the Jewish People, and for Israel. She invested time, enormous effort, and generous philanthropy in service of her fellow Jews and fellow Canadians. She was a role model for many, including young Canadian Jewish student activists and women in Jewish communal life. She led by example, with her children also taking on significant leadership roles. Her son-in-law, David Koschitzky, served in many community leadership roles including as Chair of the National Board of CIJA.
“In addition to the contributions she made to global Jewry, she was simply a lovely person who cared deeply about people. Her generosity and strength inspired many, including all of us at CIJA. Her wisdom, leadership, and unshakeable sense of community will live on and continue to inspire the next generation of Jewish community leaders. We are sad that Julia is gone and are profoundly grateful to have known such a wonderful, wise woman.
“With heads bowed, we say: “Baruch Dayan Ha’Emet” – blessed is the Almighty, the ultimate Judge of Truth. May the Koschitzky family be comforted “among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”
