event_description: Date & TimeJul 24, 2024 12:00 PM ETDescriptionAs Israel’s war with Hamas continues to rage on nine months after the terrorist group brutally murdered over 1,200 Israelis on October 7th, those still yearning for peace are searching for a path forward that doesn’t result in more violence. This is a mission that University of Haifa’s Laboratory for Religious Studies is taking very seriously. Associate Professor Uriel Simonsohn, Head of the Laboratory, recently gathered 20 prominent religious leaders from across the religious spectrum in Haifa in signing an unprecedented statement calling for cooperation between faiths during this contentious time. The statement, a testament to the rich tapestry of coexistence in Israel’s third-largest city, is one of the many ways the Laboratory has attempted to foster fruitful interreligious ties. Rather than seeing religion as an impediment to peace, the Laboratory works to cultivate a world where religion is a catalyst for dialogue and mutual understanding in Israel and the entire Middle East.Join American Society of the University of Haifa for a timely and uplifting discussion with Prof. Simonsohn, a historian of early Islamic religious communities, who has seen firsthand the power of religion as a force that can bring people together. During this webinar, he will be speaking with us about how he hopes to harness the power of religion, why it should be seen as an agent of positive change, and why the Laboratory is so invested in inter-communal collaboration more than ever. This webinar will be moderated by Dr. Chris Seiple, Founder & CEO The Sagestone Group and a Senior Research Fellow at the Haifa Laboratory for Religious Studies. Among several distinguished roles, Dr. Seiple is the former Co-Chair of the U.S. Secretary of State’s Religion and Foreign Policy working group (2011-2013), whose recommendations led to the creation of the Office of Religion & Global Affairs. To register click here.
