Kehillat Beth Israel Congregation is a welcoming egalitarian Conservative movement synagogue in Canada’s capital city, promoting Conservative Judaism and its values through religious, educational and social activities. This position offers a unique opportunity to help shape the growth of a large, dynamic congregation and contribute to the vitality of the entire Jewish community of Ottawa.
We are seeking a dedicated professional with business acumen, strong leadership abilities, proven administrative experience, and strong interpersonal skills.
You have at least three (3) years’ experience in a senior operations role with direct oversight of facilities management, budget administration and supervision of personnel. Not-for-profit management in a membership-based and/or Jewish organization is desirable. Relevant business experience would also be considered.
You are a high-energy, hands-on leader. You place a priority on the needs of congregants, and volunteers of all ages. You are a careful listener with strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.
As the “face “ of the synagogue, you will be a key participant in the branding and marketing of the synagogue’s value in the life of members and the wider community. You have the skills and experience of using office technology processes. A working knowledge of Hebrew and French is an asset.
The salary range for this position is $75 - $95,000, with other benefits.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
In line with the strategic direction approved by the Board, you will be responsible for the efficient management of the daily operations of the synagogue:
- Execute Board approved policies
- Attend Board and selective committee meetings (notably Finance)
- Ensure a respectful workplace and a safe work environment
- Liaise between Clergy and program directors, and with other staff or volunteers
Program and People Management
- Establish operational plans and run day-to-day operations of the synagogue based on the Board’s strategic directions
- Provide ongoing supervision of non-clergy staff inclusive of training, coaching and mentoring (around 5 full-time and several part-time employees)
- Provide leadership to personnel through objective setting, procedures, delegation, appraisals and communication
- Planning of High Holy Days requirements, including all membership materials
- Oversee synagogue ITC (information, technology, communications) systems and services
- Engagement and oversight of contractors and suppliers
- Ensure compliance with all government legislation, regulations, and with KBI by-laws and policies.
- Maintain full awareness of the financial, statistical, and accounting records of the organization
- Ensure that operating results in the annual budget are achieved and control operating expenses within budget
- Ensure that standard practices are followed for purchasing, contracts, payrolls, and other operational matters
- Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial accounting and reporting (monthly, quarterly and annually)
- Ensure the preparation of the annual budget for board approval
- Supervise the annual audit process (with the external audit firm
Life Cycle Support
- Assist with life cycle events, such as kiddushim, Shabbat and festival dinners
- Booking and preparation of facilities for life cycle events
- Co-ordination of burial needs for congregants with the Jewish Memorial Gardens
Marketing and Communications
- Develop and manage the strategic communications and marketing plan, using traditional methods and all social media
- Lead the branding (look and feel) of synagogue
- Develop and maintain the calendar of events, an annual programming guide and sponsorship
Engagement and Fundraising
- Manage congregational membership meetings (annual or special)
- Liaise with other organizations (Jewish and secular)
- Administrative support and leadership for joint programming with other organizations
- Support routine and special efforts to leverage the KBI’s good will and marketing, and its strong community outreach, enhancing KBI as a key recipient of philanthropy
- Assist the Clergy and Board with targeted gift giving and Legacy endowments
- Oversight of building maintenance and repairs
- Ensure effective space allocation and preparations for use
- Ensure management of physical security and related training
