OTTAWA, ON – December 29, 2022 – CIJA, the advocacy agency of Canadian Jewish federations across the country, congratulates Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the formation of a new Israeli government, which formally began its mandate this afternoon. After a long period of electoral turmoil, Israel needs stability so that it may address the many urgent issues on the political agenda.
Canadian Jewry is proud of its long history of strong partnership with Israel’s leaders and we look forward to working closely with Prime Minister Netanyahu. As an instrumental partner in ensuring the rebirth of the Jewish state, Canada continues to enjoy a special friendship with Israel, one based on a shared commitment to the values of pluralism, equality and justice.
The organized Jewish community remains committed to helping Israel withstand the many ongoing threats to its security and legitimacy; to helping Israel strengthen its place in the world and expand its circle of peaceful diplomatic relations; to enhancing the deep and profound ties between Israeli and Canadian Jews; to expanding Canada-Israel relations across multiple business, academic, scientific, and cultural sectors; and to amplifying the shared values that unite Israel, Canada, and all countries of goodwill in the Western world and the Middle East.
We express admiration for Israel’s vibrant democracy and civil society, and respect for its resilient citizenry. We are confident that Israel will continue to advance the values that have allowed it to stand out as a beacon of freedom in the Middle East and as a source of pride and spiritual sustenance for the Jewish people as a whole.
Despite some disturbing and inflammatory rhetoric employed by some coalition partners during recent Israeli election campaigns, CIJA believes that the Jewish and democratic State of Israel will demonstrate its commitment to pluralistic values and embrace all Jews regardless of their beliefs or practices, and equally important, re-affirm respect for all its citizens regardless of their religion or ethnicity.
