Premier Philippe Couillard first announced he would undertake an economic mission to Israel at the November 30th Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs-Québec (CIJA-Québec ) annual National Assembly cocktail held in cooperation with Federation CJA and CJPAC to mark our Centennial. CIJA Quebec, the advocacy arm of Federation CJA, has been a privileged partner in the planning of the upcoming Quebec mission to Israel.
Philippe Couillard will be the first sitting Quebec Premier to visit Israel in an official capacity. The May 19-25 mission will also include Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation Dominique Anglade, as well as MNA David Birnbaum. The mission will be a historic milestone in the growing relationship between Quebec and Israel.
CIJA-Québec was invited to sit officially, as the sole non-governmental organization, on the consultative committee in charge of proposals for the mission. CIJA-Québec has been involved throughout and has been a key resource in advising, facilitating connections and providing logistical support.
CIJA-Québec’s Co-Chair Rabbi Reuben Poupko and Vice-President Eta Yudin, as well as the Consul General of Israel in Montreal Ziv Kulman, will be accompanying the Premier and the delegation throughout the mission. Leaders from the business community, Universities and Civil society will be counted among the almost 100 participants. Quebec’s eagerness to do business and forge closer ties with the start-up nation demonstrates that the BDS movement continues to fail to erode Israel’s international standing as a sought-after business and scientific partner.
A successful mission will strengthen the Quebec-Israel relationship, generate business opportunities in both societies and be a source of great pride for the Montreal Jewish community, which has long since acted as a bridge between Quebec and Israel, working tirelessly to maintain and foster close and mutually beneficial relationships between the two.
