Ban the Promotion of Symbols of Terror
The growth in hate crimes against the Jewish community is being spurred by inflammatory language surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict, especially by anti-Israel protesters targeting Jewish-owned businesses and communities. These protests frequently include symbols representing Canadian-listed terror entities, including Hamas, the PFLP, and Hezbollah.
While CIJA supports peaceful protests, the use of symbols of terrorist entities is not peaceful. It is an incitement to violence and used to threaten and intimidate vulnerable communities, especially Jewish Canadians.
Recommendation:
- We call on the Government of Canada to introduce legislation banning the display and promotion of symbols of Canadian-listed terror entities.
- This could be done as an amendment to s.319 of the Criminal Code – Public Incitement of Hatred, or though new legislation.
- We also support legislation banning the display and promotion of symbols of hate, such as Nazi, Confederate, and white nationalist imagery.
- Similar legislation has already been introduced in Australia, California, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
