Durban II Part 2

The NDP flip-flop on attending Durban II continues to generate press. On Monday June 9, the Globe and Mail editorial “Durban revisited” called the NDP “sadly naive” for trusting UN officials’ promises that the event won’t become an anti-Israel hate fest: “Similar assurances were offered prior to Durban, only to have it turn into a forum on the purported evils of Zionism. Both the United States and Israel walked out of that conference, and Canada should have done likewise. It is a wise policy to avoid Durban II entirely.”

Meanwhile, in today’s National Post, an op-ed by Liberal MP Bob Rae, “We must hold the UN to a higher standard,” critiques the UN for allowing the Durban debacle to take place. While Rae does not mention his former party’s about-face on the issue, he strongly endorses Canada’s decision to boycott the event: “This conference will increase race hatred and misunderstanding. It will detract from the hard work necessary to achieve peace in the Middle East. It will give yet another soapbox for the peddlers of false history and vacuous analysis…Canada can be a better friend of the UN by insisting on a higher standard. There are far better ways to spend time and money.”
