Toronto, ON – Last night, the Niagara Regional Council voted to adopt a motion condemning the Boycott Divestment Sanctions movement against Israel by a wide margin of 24-2. The Council also resolved to introduce another motion condemning the antisemitic tweets made by Councillor Andy Petrowsky.
In response, Judy Zelikovitz, Vice President of University and Local Partner Services at the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), issued the following:
“We applaud the Niagara Regional Council for rejecting antisemitism and the hateful, divisive BDS movement. BDS is discrimination based on national origin.
“CIJA will continue working to strengthen ties between Canada and Israel, based on shared democratic values. The friendship between the two democracies has resulted in important partnerships in academic and scientific research, meaningful cultural exchange, and the creation of hundreds of jobs in Ontario.
“We thank Councillor Sandy Annunziata for his leadership on this important motion, and all council members who voted to condemn antisemitism.”
