Toronto, ON – Today at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas re-affirmed his intention to persist in avoiding formal obligations to engage in direct negotiations with Israel, and instead to pursue unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood at the UN.
In response, Shimon Fogel, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, issued the following statement:
“We are disappointed that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas continues to avoid direct negotiations with Israel, and has instead chosen to use the UN as a platform for symbolic gestures that will create neither peace nor a Palestinian state.
“Both Canada and the broader international community, along with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, have signed on to a clear framework for resolving the conflict. This consensus approach envisions the creation of a Palestinian state solely on a foundation of peace with Israel and including security guarantees to maintain that peace. Such a resolution will be determined only through direct negotiations, reconciliation and difficult compromises by both sides. On all three of these points, Israelis have shown not only willingness, but a demonstrable record of achievement.
“In refusing direct negotiations for all but a few months over the past three years, the Palestinian leadership is not merely undermining the established peace process. It is ultimately forestalling the creation of a Palestinian state at peace with Israel. In so doing, Mahmoud Abbas risks perpetuating this painful conflict for the next generation of Palestinians and Israelis alike.”

Réaction à la déclaration du président Mahmoud Abbas devant l’Assemblé générale des Nations Unies
Toronto, ON Aujourd’hui à l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies à New York, le président de l’Autorité palestinienne Mahmoud Abbas a réaffirmé son intention de tourner le dos à ses obligations formelles d’engager des négociations directes avec Israël et de plutôt poursuivre la reconnaissance unilatérale d’un Etat palestinien à l’ONU.
En réponse, Shimon Fogel, PDG du Centre consultatif des relations juives et israéliennes, a fait la déclaration suivante:
«Nous sommes déçus que le président palestinien Mahmoud Abbas continue d’éviter des négociations directes avec Israël et qu’il ait plutôt choisi d’utiliser l’ONU comme une plate-forme pour des gestes symboliques qui ne créeront ni la paix ni un Etat palestinien.
«Le Canada et la communauté internationale, ainsi que les dirigeants israéliens et palestiniens, ont souscrit à un cadre clair pour la résolution du conflit. Cette approche consensuelle prévoit la création d’un Etat palestinien uniquement sur la base de la paix avec Israël, y compris des garanties de sécurité pour le maintien de cette paix. Une telle résolution ne sera déterminée que par des négociations directes, la réconciliation et des compromis difficiles de la part des deux parties. Sur ces trois points, les Israéliens ont non seulement fait preuve de volonté, mais ont un historique tangible de réalisations à cet égard.
« En refusant des négociations directes (à l’exception de quelques mois) au cours des trois dernières années, la direction palestinienne n’est pas seulement en train de saper le processus de paix établi. Elle prévient ultimement la création d’un Etat palestinien en paix avec Israël. Ce faisant, Mahmoud Abbas risque de perpétuer ce conflit douloureux pour la prochaine génération de Palestiniens et d’Israéliens. »
