OTTAWA, ON – Today, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs applauded the Government of Canada’s decision to expand its economic sanctions against the Iranian regime, in concert with measures taken by the United Kingdom and the United States. Shimon Fogel, CEO of the Centre, issued the following statement:
“We commend the government for introducing these measures, in support of the international diplomatic effort to stop Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Through its actions and the consistent messages articulated by senior cabinet members like Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and Defence Minister Peter MacKay, Canada has demonstrated crucial leadership on this important file. We are especially gratified that, here in Canada, a cross-party consensus has emerged backing this initiative, with support for such measures having been championed by Members of Parliament such as the Honourable Irwin Cotler. We echo the NDP’s call to those recalcitrant nations of the world to join Canada in confronting the Iranian nuclear threat.
“The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Security Council have repeatedly called on Iran to end its illegal nuclear program. Combined with its extensive financial and military support for terrorism, Iran’s nuclear drive poses a threat to not only the security of the Middle East but to the entire world. Should the Iranian regime continue on this dangerous path, Canada and the international community must be ready to apply further pressure with even stronger diplomatic measures.”
