TO Star Editorial: “Israel’s 60-year triumph of hope”

Today’s editorial, however, lauds the strides Israel has made in its 60 years but warns: “Sheer demography dictates that Israel’s 5.5 million Jews find a way to live in harmony with 1.5 million Arab citizens, and with the 3.7 million Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza, not to mention the 2.7 million refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.”

The Star does acknowledge that “Israel’s West Bank ‘separation barrier’ ” and its pullout from Gaza, were efforts to gain distance, to bolster security” but “neither is a substitute for peace.”

And in the end, it’s all up to the Israelis. Quoting the Jerusalem Post‘s David Horowitz, the Star says Israel must “decide what it wants” and “boldy seize the future” like its 1948 founders.
