England’s influential The Economist mag. spent 16 pages slicing and dicing Israel in a Special Report a few weeks back. Now the arts department looks at Israeli documentaries recently shown at festivals in London and in Tel Aviv.  The latest docs prove Israel is not a “true melting pot” but the “ultimate outsiders are, of course, the Palestinians.”
In the same issue, a piece on the problem of reforming the Palestinian Security forces gives the PA many large breaks while ultimately blaming Israel for not allowing the security forces enough freedom. The Economist concludes: “The security reform is a victim of the Israeli army’s success. Israelis have got used to a life virtually free of suicide bombers. There is no way they can expect the same effectiveness from the PA forces. But those forces cannot build up to the same level unless Israel gives them leeway to do so. As so often in the Israeli-Palestinian puzzle, it is a case of chicken and egg. ”
More balanced is “A screaming start” about the sadly unreformed United Nations Human Rights Council.Â
