Meeting of Foreign Ministers Strengthens Canada-Israel Partnership
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Avigdor Liberman, Israel’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met in Ottawa to discuss a range of bilateral issues that support the continuing partnership between Canada and Israel, and matters of mutual concern in the Middle East.
The visit was an opportunity to underscore the close friendship of Canada and Israel, which this year mark 60 years of diplomatic relations.
On the peace process, Minister Cannon emphasized Canada’s full support for Israel’s right to defend itself and to live in peace and security with its neighbours. Canada believes that Israel’s security, in the face of the continued threats from certain elements within the region, is a predominant consideration in moving toward peace in the region.
Canada will continue to work with the United States and others in helping the Palestinian Authority improve its security capacity. Minister Cannon also outlined Canada’s support for the resumption of comprehensive negotiations for a two-state solution and regional peace.
Minister Cannon also emphasized Canada’s standing offer to assist the parties in any way they would find helpful.
