Even as the United Church of Canada questions its future, it continues to take a strong pro-Palestinian stand. Among the conflict-related items on its website is an open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, calling for Canada to “urgently and immediately resume financial support to the Palestinian Unity Government so that the Palestinian people can live the life of dignity to which they are entitled.”
Think the Church’s political meddling is new? Then check out the 1972Â letter to the editor of the Winnipeg Free Press below. Unearthed by a CIC Scene reader. it recounts a disturbing conversation with the minister of one of “the largest and most prestigious United Churches in Winnipeg.” The minister told the writer that Jews should leave Israel and “go back where they came from.”
